A series of detention basins were created above the downtown district that suffered from repetitive flooding. The basins are designed to fill up and hold excess flood waters until the system can recover and drain naturally.

The area surrounding the basins are planted with ornamental trees and foliage to add to the viewscape.
Detention basins store excess rain runoff for a short period of time, usually less than 24 hours, to allow the drainage system to function. This keeps the excess runoff from inundating perimeter property or overtopping normal stream channels.
